Mario Takes Out Xenosaga and Tekken

Another RPG tries to take Nintendo out; plumber stands strong.

Square Enix has been the only company with enough game power to knock New Super Mario Bros. from the charts, if only for a week. Namco Bandai attempted a chart hijacking during July 3rd through July 9th in Japan, but the Media Create numbers report it was close but no cigar. Nintendo's champion held steady with 134,568 units, while Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra sits at number two with 123,847 units.

Tekken: Dark Resurrection for the PSP also broke into the charts this week with 33,652 sales, taking 4th place away from Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria, which fell out of the top ten this week and into 11th. Another newcomer this week, however, is Rockman ZX, a side-scrolling installment in the vein of Mega Man Zero that's been gaining incredible buzz from importers so far. Capcom piled up 33,652 units for their efforts.

We don't know to explain it, but Microsoft better start breaking out the champagne in Japan. Xbox fell to a record-low movement of 8 units last week, but picked up to 13 this round, the highest the machine's been in weeks. Its older brother Xbox 360 dropped a few hundred units this week to 1,610 units, as its last major release, Chromehounds, has already fallen off the top 50 chart.

In order to help you better keep track of Japan's sales, this week I'm implementing a little change to our listings and including last week's numbers, as well. The most recent numbers are next to the game, but for a title still on the charts, their previous week numbers will be listed, too. Enjoy.
